What to know about the Iran war:
- As the U.S.-Iran war hit the three-month mark, the two sides were negotiating through mediators on a memorandum of understanding that would extend their ceasefire by 60 days and begin talks over Iran's nuclear program.
- U.S. sources told the White House press pool a tentative agreement has been reached, but it's pending President Trump's approval. Iran also has not yet provided a response to the latest version, a regional official said.
- Vice President JD Vance said negotiators are "going back and forth" and making a lot of progress, but it's "still TBD" whether talks will reach a point where Mr. Trump can sign a deal. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also characterized talks as ongoing.
- The ceasefire remains fragile: The Pentagon has hit Iranian targets twice this week in what it called defensive strikes, leading Iran to accuse the U.S. of violating the truce and announce retaliatory strikes on an American base. CENTCOM said Kuwait intercepted an Iranian missile Thursday, and there were no reports of a U.S. base being hit.
